Styles and mulit-level lists in Word 2016

I am creating global styles in templates for my firm. Everything is working correctly except for having a tab after the section number. I set the tab in the multi-level list, apply it to the style and it looks great in the template and the new document (i.e., if I double click on the template). However, when I close Word, those changes go away! Any ideas? Things I tried include setting the template as the document template and pointing to the folder in the User templates and then separately when that didn't work in the Workgroup templates. No fixes were apparent upon an internet search.
