JS - run in browser, test in node/mocha

0

I've been working on a browser based visualization with D3. It's plain html + JS.

Since some of the logic functions have grown rather complex I put them in an separate JS file and imported it with <script src="foo.js"> in the index.html.

Now I wanted to add some tests for these functions in foo.js using mocha but I have been unable to figure out the correct way to make it work both in the <script> import and in node/mocha.

The closest I have come is using exports.foo = { foo1: foo1 } in the foo.js file, and const foo = require('../foo.js') in my test file.

But this then throws a Uncaught ReferenceError: exports is not defined in the browser. (This can be avoided by defining a global var exports = {} in the index.html but this surely can't be the correct way to do things).

So the question is:

How do I correctly make my functions in the foo.js file testable while still maintaining the compatibility to import it in the index.html with <script src="foo.js">?

  • I think that will be require('./foo.js') .A single dot
