Javascript cookie not working in Wordpress

I'm using the below perfectly on non-Wordpress sites to close the div and set a cookie. However putting this into the footer of Wordpress site, the div toggles fine but the cookie is not set. Does it have to be done a different way in Wordpress to set the cookie?
<script type="text/javascript" src="jquery.cookie.js"></script>
<script type="text/javascript">
$(function(){
if($.cookie){
$(".bar").toggle(!(!!$.cookie("cookie")) || $.cookie("cookie") === 'true');
}
$('.closebutton').on('click', function(){
$(".bar").toggle();
$.cookie("cookie", $(".bar").is(':visible'), {expires: 1, path:'/'});
});
});
</script>

Have you checked your development console for errors? Do you have the correct path to jquery.cookie.js? Make sure that jQuery is loaded before jquery.cookie.js.
