Can you have a transaction block in a routine?

0

I'm trying to create a routine with has a transaction block, but the BEGIN statement of the routine conflicts with the begin statement of the transaction.
Is it possible to have a transaction inside a routine in postgres so if one statement fails, everything would rollback?

What I'm trying to do is something like this:

CREATE FUNCTION transfer_money_from_user_to_user(payer_id BIGINT, payee_id BIGINT)
RETURNS TABLE(id INTEGER)
LANGUAGE plpgsql
AS $$
BEGIN
/* transaction start */
update user_money set user_money = user_money - 100 where user_money.id = payer_id;
update user_money set user_money = user_money + 100 where user_money.id = payee_id;
/* transaction end */
$$;

Thank you!

  • you can only do this in procedures (not functions) available since postgres 11
