Listview ArrayAdapter setItemChecked isn't highlighting cell as selected and reselecting cell won't...

0

Good morning, i have a listview that i want to fill with String values with an ArrayAdapter, i have gotten all this working except for when it initially starts up i need the "currently selected item" to be selected and highlighted

listview is handled previously in the onCreateView and is not null and currentPos is 3 (the stateNames list is of 7 at the moment)

adapter = new ArrayAdapter<>(getContext(), android.R.layout.simple_list_item_1, stateNames);
listView.setAdapter(adapter);
if (selectedState != null) {
listView.setItemChecked(currentPos, true);
adapter.notifyDataSetChanged();
}

also here is the onItemClick listener for the listview

listView.setOnItemClickListener(new AdapterView.OnItemClickListener() {
@Override
public void onItemClick(AdapterView<?> parent, View view, int position, long id) {
if (selectedState == null || !customStates.get(position).getCustomStateID().equals(selectedState.getCustomStateID())) {
selectedState = customStates.get(position);
}else{
listView.clearChoices();
selectedState = null;
}

adapter.notifyDataSetChanged();
}
});

so if nothing is selected or anything else is selected, then continue and select the new item, otherwise clear the selections and un-highlight everything

But when i load up the fragment it has the value selected but not highlighted, and when i click for a second time the item is unselected but remains highlighted.

Does anyone know what i'm missing to "refresh" the highlighting on the cell?

Thank you.
