Browser should refresh cache only when necessary

0

I would like for the browser to behave in the following way when requesting an item from the server.

  • Browser checks its cache.

  • If the item is not there then request it from the server.

  • If the item is in cache then request its timestamp on the server.

  • If server timestamp is more recent than the cached timestamp then request item from server.

  • 5. Otherwise use cached item.

  • Is this behavior implemented in modern browsers? If so how do I request this behavior from the browser?
